Description

GM Power Folding Mirror Repair Kit (Billet Steel)

Stop replacing $1,000 mirrors with the same flawed parts. The factory power-folding mirrors on GM trucks and SUVs fail because of a single, inexpensive plastic gear. When that gear cracks, dealers charge upwards of $700–$1,200 for a full mirror assembly that carries the exact same defect.

GruvenParts.com provides a permanent, engineered solution: high-strength Billet Steel gears and high-torque motors designed to outlast the vehicle.

The Engineering Gap: OEM Failure vs. GruvenParts Solution

Feature

OEM Factory Unit / Boost Auto

GruvenParts Billet Solution

Gear Material

Thin, fragile plastic spur gear.

High-strength Billet Steel (integral spiral shaft).

Failure Mode

Fatigue cracking from age or minor impact.

Virtually indestructible; tested to 5,000+ cycles.

Motor Specs

Low-torque; prone to burnout.

High-torque custom motor for smooth operation.

Grounding

Externally grounded (Incompatible with metal).

Internally grounded to prevent BCM short circuits.

Cost

$700 - $1,200 (Full assembly).

Under $100 (DIY Gear/Motor Kit).

Critical Technical Note: Why the Motor Matters

You cannot simply install a metal gear onto the factory GM motor. The OEM motor circuit is not designed for a conductive metal gear; attempting to "mix and match" will short out your Body Control Module (BCM). Every GruvenParts kit includes our custom-engineered, internally grounded motor to ensure electrical safety and increased torque.

Choosing Your Repair Path

Path 1: DIY Gear & Motor Kit The most cost-effective choice for those comfortable with a workbench repair.

Expert Installation Tips & FAQ

To ensure a successful repair and protect your vehicle's electronics, please review these critical requirements before beginning your installation:

  • The "No-Mix" Rule (Electrical Safety): Never attempt to install the Billet Steel gear using the original OEM motor. The factory motor is externally grounded; using it with a metal gear will create a short circuit and permanently damage your Body Control Module (BCM). You must use the internally grounded motor provided in our kits.
  • Mirror Type Verification: These parts are specifically engineered for Standard (Non-Tow) Mirrors. If your mirror extends outward for towing, these gears will not fit. Click here for our Towing Mirror Gear Page.
  • 2014+ Pickup Differences: If you own a 2014 or newer Silverado/Sierra, the mirror frame plastics differ from earlier generations. While the internal drive unit is identical, the housing disassembly requires a slightly different approach. Please refer specifically to our 2014-2018 PDF Guide.
  • The "Core" Condition (Option 2): If purchasing the pre-assembled drive unit, your returned "core" must be in rebuildable condition. We can only accept units where the motor or spur gear is the point of failure. If the main plastic housing or frame of your drive unit is physically shattered, it cannot be rebuilt or refunded.
  • Tool Tip: We recommend having a basic set of trim removal tools and a small socket set. Take photos during disassembly to ensure wire routing remains clear for the re-install.

    They work very well

Posted by Jedediah on 14th Nov 2023

I ordered the motors and gears for both of my mirrors. One of my mirrors was not functioning, but I figured I'd preemptively repair the other one as well. It took me a little while to get the first one replaced properly, but once it was done, I was able to get the other side wrapped up in just 30 minutes. I did add a little grease to the gears like the factory had on the plastic gears. I figured it couldn't be a bad thing. Both mirrors now function flawlessly and they even fold/unfold faster than before. I tested the passenger mirror with the new motor and gears against the driver's mirror with the functioning factory motor and gears.

    Quality Parts- Good Instructions

Posted by Monte Murphy on 11th Nov 2023

Replaced 2011 Tahoe power mirror gear and electric motor. Took a bit of time but parts were great quality and instructions were good. Be very careful on collet alignment...read instructions and follow closely. Also, not sure how I could have done it without an arbor press...lots of tension on the spring. Saved lots of $ doing it myself. Highly recommend.

2016 Dodge Ram Experience - Saved me $600

Posted by Jeremy on 23rd Oct 2023

It would be helpful to make a video for the 2016 Ram Trucks like mine, so I relied on the PDF. Took me about 3 hours but that was mostly me being careful to gently tug all of the wired connectors so I don't destroy them when I unplug. A few notes on the PDF: 1. The mirror instructions should be revised: Unlike the pre-2014 trucks, to remove the mirror, you just lower it down as much as it will go, grab the top half with your full hands and fingers (wear gloves), and YANK it down 45 degrees. I promise you won't break the mirror. There's just two clips on the top, and the bottom is a hinge. There are several videos on YouTube of people who show how to do it this way. 2. Etching a mark on the base and the motor is super smart to make sure you put it in the way you removed it. 3. I guess I could have bought a cheapo press/vice from Harbor Freight to push down the spring, but I did it with a large C-clamp, and a 1" deep socket. You could have a friend push down the socket while you turned the spring retainer - it's not THAT strong. 4. I just don't see a need to grind down the Collet. The nylon gear lasted seven years, so I imagine that your metal gear will last another seven. 5. LOL the new motor runs so much faster (and louder) than the original. It's funny to watch the driver side fold in half the time that the passenger side does. Bottom line, 5-stars. The body shop wanted $700 to replace the mirror. The dealer wanted $600 for the entire powered mirror assembly - they would not just sell the motor. So basically I spent $70 for this part $8 for a large C-clamp (to use as a make-shift press) $9 for a cheapo set of torx screw drivers $10 for a 1 inch deep socket. (prob didn't need a two inch deep socket) Effectively saving $500 and the joy of getting to know how a sideview mirror works. ** reply ** Thanks Jeremy and good job on repairing yours ! FYI the tabs on collet SHOULD be ground down. Those are there because the OEM knew the plastic gear would break, and when it does the entire mirror head can back drive (fold in) from the force of the wind. So, to prevent that, they added the bumps (tabs) protruding off the collet. However, now the mirror drive unit most overcome those tabs on every fold and unfold cycle, which stresses the internals and motor, needlessly. I say needlessly because once you install this strengthened metal gear it wont break. If it did break, you would of had to smash the entire mirror off the truck and you have a totaled vehicle at that point anyways so the mirror is the least of your problems ... Bottom line is grinding tabs off collet allows mechanism to move easier and smoother and quieter and the tabs are NOT needed because the metal gear is now stronger than anything else in the unit.

    Great product!

Posted by Unknown on 26th Sep 2023

I already replaced the motor and gear in my driver side mirror about 5 years ago and that window is still working great. I knew when the passenger side mirror went out exactly where to go. Quality part and motor! It should have been made like this from the manufacturer. Definitely requires some skill and tools to complete the replacement unless you buy the motor and gear assembly refurbished from Gruven. Mirror is working great now. Thanks

    awesome product

    Posted by E.Lo on 23rd Sep 2023

I bought the passenger motor drive unit. Just a note if you have an aftermarket side mirror (i.e. Ebay or Amazon) this unit will not work, at least in my experience. I was able to aquire a OEM side mirror, and it worked out. The video is informative. The hardest part is removing and installing the actual mirror. I would recommend this product. Whenever my driver side goes out I'll do the same thing and buy here. Thanks

    metal is better than plastic

Posted by Stephen on 21st Sep 2023

I changed the drivers side about 6 months ago then the passenger side stopped working a couple weeks ago. Both plastic gears were cracked in the rotation mechanism so I decided to use Gruven motors and gears rather than OEM. While they make noise when operating I’m satisfied they will last. I especially want to compliment Gruvenparts for the fine video they produced! I referred to it often while R&R ing.
