Description

GM Power Folding Mirror Repair Kit (Billet Steel)

Stop replacing $1,000 mirrors with the same flawed parts. The factory power-folding mirrors on GM trucks and SUVs fail because of a single, inexpensive plastic gear. When that gear cracks, dealers charge upwards of $700–$1,200 for a full mirror assembly that carries the exact same defect.

GruvenParts.com provides a permanent, engineered solution: high-strength Billet Steel gears and high-torque motors designed to outlast the vehicle.

The Engineering Gap: OEM Failure vs. GruvenParts Solution

Feature

OEM Factory Unit / Boost Auto

GruvenParts Billet Solution

Gear Material

Thin, fragile plastic spur gear.

High-strength Billet Steel (integral spiral shaft).

Failure Mode

Fatigue cracking from age or minor impact.

Virtually indestructible; tested to 5,000+ cycles.

Motor Specs

Low-torque; prone to burnout.

High-torque custom motor for smooth operation.

Grounding

Externally grounded (Incompatible with metal).

Internally grounded to prevent BCM short circuits.

Cost

$700 - $1,200 (Full assembly).

Under $100 (DIY Gear/Motor Kit).

Critical Technical Note: Why the Motor Matters

You cannot simply install a metal gear onto the factory GM motor. The OEM motor circuit is not designed for a conductive metal gear; attempting to "mix and match" will short out your Body Control Module (BCM). Every GruvenParts kit includes our custom-engineered, internally grounded motor to ensure electrical safety and increased torque.

Choosing Your Repair Path

Path 1: DIY Gear & Motor Kit The most cost-effective choice for those comfortable with a workbench repair.

  • Includes: 1 or 2 Billet Steel Gears and High-Torque Motors.
  • Best For: Owners looking for a permanent fix at the lowest price point.
  • Compatibility: Fits 2007–Present GM Non-Tow Mirrors (Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Acadia, Traverse, Enclave, Escalade).

Path 2: Pre-Assembled Drive Unit (Core Exchange)

Skip the internal assembly and swap the entire drive unit.

  • Includes: A fully rebuilt motor drive unit with the steel gear and motor already installed and tested.
  • Process: Requires a $30 core deposit. Send us your rebuildable old unit to receive your refund.
  • Note: Due to high demand and core availability, lead times can vary (approx. 4–6 weeks). For the fastest turnaround, you may send your unit in for a same-day rebuild.

Application & Fitment

This kit is designed for Standard (Non-Towing) Power Folding Mirrors on the following 2007–Present models:

  • Chevy: Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Avalanche, Traverse.
  • GMC: Sierra, Yukon, Denali, Acadia.

Expert Installation Tips & FAQ

To ensure a successful repair and protect your vehicle's electronics, please review these critical requirements before beginning your installation:

  • The "No-Mix" Rule (Electrical Safety): Never attempt to install the Billet Steel gear using the original OEM motor. The factory motor is externally grounded; using it with a metal gear will create a short circuit and permanently damage your Body Control Module (BCM). You must use the internally grounded motor provided in our kits.
  • Mirror Type Verification: These parts are specifically engineered for Standard (Non-Tow) Mirrors. If your mirror extends outward for towing, these gears will not fit. Click here for our Towing Mirror Gear Page.
  • 2014+ Pickup Differences: If you own a 2014 or newer Silverado/Sierra, the mirror frame plastics differ from earlier generations. While the internal drive unit is identical, the housing disassembly requires a slightly different approach. Please refer specifically to our 2014-2018 PDF Guide.
  • The "Core" Condition (Option 2): If purchasing the pre-assembled drive unit, your returned "core" must be in rebuildable condition. We can only accept units where the motor or spur gear is the point of failure. If the main plastic housing or frame of your drive unit is physically shattered, it cannot be rebuilt or refunded.
  • Tool Tip: We recommend having a basic set of trim removal tools and a small socket set. Take photos during disassembly to ensure wire routing remains clear for the re-install.

Replaced left mirror motor with GRUVENPARTS mirror motor, mirror works great and is way faster than original motor.

    Great solution

Posted by Allen Mason on 3rd Jun 2023

The part fit like OEM and was easy to install. The DIY video helped address any questions. I bought the pair assuming the other side would fail and will swap out the second gear proactively because the metal gear is so much faster at folding the mirror. Thanks for providing a great option to avoid complete mirror assembly replacement.

2011 Chevy Avalanche Folding Mirror Gear/Motor Repair

Posted by Terry G on 24th May 2023

Thank you! The replacement gear and new motor for my 2011 Chevy Avalanche LTZ could not have worked better. It took me about 2 hours total to replace the gear and motor. But, I was comfortable in attempting to complete the repair on my own based on the installation video and very detailed written instructions. The longest part of the entire process was completely dismantling the mirror to access the motor. Per the instructions, I was very diligent and careful due to the age of the parts. Replacing the actual gear and motor took less than 15 minutes and the metal replacement gear fit perfectly. I'm confident it'll last as long as the truck. Again, thanks for great parts and for taking the time to provide such great instructions for the DIY folks.

    Great product

Bought a set for the mirrors of my 07 Avalanche. Took longer to disassemble the mirrors to do the installation than it did to perform the upgrade. The video was a great help to watch beforehand but they made it more complicated by not using a marker to mark alignment spots. now if they could offer new gears for the mirror actuators id happily drop another $100 on that set.

Replaced gear/motor in both mirrors. Working great now!

Posted by Jordan on 22nd May 2023

Written instructions and Youtube install video were a big help. Takes some time to do, but well worth it compared to buying cheap Chinese replacements or paying 5-10x as much as this kit for new OEM mirrors that'll break again from the same crappy plastic gears (if you can find them in my case). Word of advice for those installing at home, for removing the spring I used a battery terminal brush cap and it worked perfectly. I trust that these parts will last a long time and am extremely thankful to Gruven for offering them.

The way the mirrors should have been engineered in the first place!

Posted by David Lewis on 4th May 2023

This is a high quality product and I'm delighted with the entire transaction, installation and performance. GM should have engineered the mirrors with metal worm gears in the first place, but Gruvenparts to the rescue! I know this will be the last time I have to replace the mirrors or motor for years to come! Great job Gruvenparts.

    Simply Excellent

Posted by David Lewis on 18th Apr 2023

I purchased the complete motor assembly that contains these strengthened Spur Gears for my 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe. Following the video directions of disassembling the mirror and removing the old motor and installing the new one took only about an hour and a half. The motor works great, is very fast (faster than the passenger side, which is still sporting the cheap plastic stock gears). Hoping the new one will work for the remainder of the life of the vehicle (which for me will be another 15 years!). Great product. I plan to replace the passenger side with one of these when it fails.

    This is the ticket!

Posted by JFP on 14th Apr 2023

This is the best repair for the power fold mirror! Very easy to install and works better than a new complete mirror. I saved over $400. The instructions were the best that I have ever read.

I was a skeptical at first but after doing the first mirror gear I was glad I bought the second set of motor and gears. Very easy to install. Well built gear that aren’t going to fail anytime soon. The video makes it an easy job
