Description

GM Power Folding Mirror Repair Kit (Billet Steel)

Stop replacing $1,000 mirrors with the same flawed parts. The factory power-folding mirrors on GM trucks and SUVs fail because of a single, inexpensive plastic gear. When that gear cracks, dealers charge upwards of $700–$1,200 for a full mirror assembly that carries the exact same defect.

GruvenParts.com provides a permanent, engineered solution: high-strength Billet Steel gears and high-torque motors designed to outlast the vehicle.

The Engineering Gap: OEM Failure vs. GruvenParts Solution

Feature

OEM Factory Unit / Boost Auto

GruvenParts Billet Solution

Gear Material

Thin, fragile plastic spur gear.

High-strength Billet Steel (integral spiral shaft).

Failure Mode

Fatigue cracking from age or minor impact.

Virtually indestructible; tested to 5,000+ cycles.

Motor Specs

Low-torque; prone to burnout.

High-torque custom motor for smooth operation.

Grounding

Externally grounded (Incompatible with metal).

Internally grounded to prevent BCM short circuits.

Cost

$700 - $1,200 (Full assembly).

Under $100 (DIY Gear/Motor Kit).

Critical Technical Note: Why the Motor Matters

You cannot simply install a metal gear onto the factory GM motor. The OEM motor circuit is not designed for a conductive metal gear; attempting to "mix and match" will short out your Body Control Module (BCM). Every GruvenParts kit includes our custom-engineered, internally grounded motor to ensure electrical safety and increased torque.

Choosing Your Repair Path

Path 1: DIY Gear & Motor Kit The most cost-effective choice for those comfortable with a workbench repair.

  • Includes: 1 or 2 Billet Steel Gears and High-Torque Motors.
  • Best For: Owners looking for a permanent fix at the lowest price point.
  • Compatibility: Fits 2007–Present GM Non-Tow Mirrors (Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Acadia, Traverse, Enclave, Escalade).

Path 2: Pre-Assembled Drive Unit (Core Exchange)

Skip the internal assembly and swap the entire drive unit.

  • Includes: A fully rebuilt motor drive unit with the steel gear and motor already installed and tested.
  • Process: Requires a $30 core deposit. Send us your rebuildable old unit to receive your refund.
  • Note: Due to high demand and core availability, lead times can vary (approx. 4–6 weeks). For the fastest turnaround, you may send your unit in for a same-day rebuild.

Application & Fitment

This kit is designed for Standard (Non-Towing) Power Folding Mirrors on the following 2007–Present models:

  • Chevy: Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Avalanche, Traverse.
  • GMC: Sierra, Yukon, Denali, Acadia.

Expert Installation Tips & FAQ

To ensure a successful repair and protect your vehicle's electronics, please review these critical requirements before beginning your installation:

  • The "No-Mix" Rule (Electrical Safety): Never attempt to install the Billet Steel gear using the original OEM motor. The factory motor is externally grounded; using it with a metal gear will create a short circuit and permanently damage your Body Control Module (BCM). You must use the internally grounded motor provided in our kits.
  • Mirror Type Verification: These parts are specifically engineered for Standard (Non-Tow) Mirrors. If your mirror extends outward for towing, these gears will not fit. Click here for our Towing Mirror Gear Page.
  • 2014+ Pickup Differences: If you own a 2014 or newer Silverado/Sierra, the mirror frame plastics differ from earlier generations. While the internal drive unit is identical, the housing disassembly requires a slightly different approach. Please refer specifically to our 2014-2018 PDF Guide.
  • The "Core" Condition (Option 2): If purchasing the pre-assembled drive unit, your returned "core" must be in rebuildable condition. We can only accept units where the motor or spur gear is the point of failure. If the main plastic housing or frame of your drive unit is physically shattered, it cannot be rebuilt or refunded.
  • Tool Tip: We recommend having a basic set of trim removal tools and a small socket set. Take photos during disassembly to ensure wire routing remains clear for the re-install.

    Great Product

Posted by Ron in Minnesota on 26th Apr 2017

Ordered the set (2gears,2motors), as my left mirror didn't work. Parts arrived quickly and looked correct. Had to wait for 2 weeks to get enough time to have the truck down for 2 days. Disassembled both mirrors, epoxied them, and left them to cure as directed. Next afternoon, assembled both, and they work great! I would highly recommend these to anyone with the same problem! To Paul, I would say great job!! Way to improve on a vastly inferior part. Thank you very much. Ron -- response -- Thanks Ron ! Please let us if theres anything else we can help with.

Great Fix but take your time

Posted by Scott on 11th Apr 2017

Amazing product, BUT be very careful when dismantling the motor turn assembly. It goes back together one way and one way only! Mine had a very slight burr on the base assembly that had to be removed for proper function. That took several assemble and disassemble procedures to find. But I did find it and am extremely happy with the outcome. I'll bet I could do another one in 40 minuets now. I'll be trying your door handle inserts next.

    Perfect Part

Posted by John Gschwendtner on 11th Apr 2017

Part was the perfect fit. The online directions were a huge help. There was still user error involved, but ultimately the product was the right fit and corrected the issue.

Great fix for an otherwise very expensive repair.

Posted by Vern on 8th Apr 2017

I had searched for mirror replacement parts coming up short until I stumbled upon your sight and a mirror repair solution. Ordered replacement gear and motor, they were shipped and received very quickly. I am an auto technician so installation was very straight forward for me. I used JB Clearweld 4400psi 2 part epoxy from Home Depot to bond the new gear to the original shaft and reassembled the actuator after sufficient cure time per instructions. This fix can be performed by a good DIY'er, you must be careful not to break the mirror glass upon disassembly and use caution when removing and installing compressed spring. I used a 15/16" chrome short socket and a vice to compress spring for retainer removal and installation. The power fold operates perfectly and is rock solid but is slightly noisier than stock because you now have metal on metal gears instead of plastic on metal gears. I highly recommend this repair for your power folding mirror. response -- Thanks Vern. You can apply a grease to the gears as well, it will quiet them down somewhat. Also, the more you operate the mirrors, the more the gears will break in to each other, and mesh more quietly. Thanks for your review ! Paul@GruvenParts.com

Excellent fix but installation is not easy

Posted by Phil Clark on 8th Apr 2017

The right-side mirror on my 07 Escalade quit folding. I purchased two motors and two gears for $100 plus ship. But let's face it -- getting to the broken gear is not a project for the typical amateur. Disassembling that mirror holds multiple challenges, particularly when you get to removal of the spring retainer. I found that using a 1-inch 6-point impact socket works best, but the problem is that the retainer is distorted by the gap in the end of the spring, so it doesn't want to turn. I put a little pressure on the socket using a vice, and jammed a small screwdriver in there to flatten out the retainer. Then it turns and releases the spring. Once reassembled, the new gear was binding and would not spin. I eventually worked it loose and applied 12V directly to break it in until it ran smoothly on the bench. After putting it all back together, the mirror works great now, and I plan on doing the other mirror soon. Thanks for a well-engineered modification that saves a LOT of money! response -- Thanks Phil, and yes I know the retaining ring can be a challenge. I use a small arbor press with 1" socket and just compress, then spin the socket 1/6 turn to unlock. Make sure to wear safety goggles as the spring is quite heavy! Paul

    Quick and easy!!

Posted by Joseph Davis on 7th Apr 2017

Awesome product Paul! The kit you sent me saved me a lot time and money if I would have had to go through the dealership for side mirror replacements.. But you already knew that.. Lol.. Thanks again.

Fantastic Solution To A Very Common Problem!

Posted by R. Forester on 6th Apr 2017

The Gruven folding mirror repair parts were a perfect fit and solution to some poor engineering at GM. I only needed to replace the motor and gear on one side but am ready to do the other side WHEN it fails. The new parts operate quieter and faster than the old parts. I'm a very satisfied customer and will be back.

Repair and upgrade GM folding Mirror

Posted by David Bennett on 5th Apr 2017

Great and inexpensive fix for a terrible GM design. Both my folding mirrors had given up and it was going to cost about $400-$500 per mirror to replace them.. Your fix for $100 and about 3 hours of work improved my mirrors to better than new. The DYI instructions and phone tech support was outstanding. THX
