Description

GM Power Folding Mirror Repair Kit (Billet Steel)

Stop replacing $1,000 mirrors with the same flawed parts. The factory power-folding mirrors on GM trucks and SUVs fail because of a single, inexpensive plastic gear. When that gear cracks, dealers charge upwards of $700–$1,200 for a full mirror assembly that carries the exact same defect.

GruvenParts.com provides a permanent, engineered solution: high-strength Billet Steel gears and high-torque motors designed to outlast the vehicle.

The Engineering Gap: OEM Failure vs. GruvenParts Solution

Feature

OEM Factory Unit / Boost Auto

GruvenParts Billet Solution

Gear Material

Thin, fragile plastic spur gear.

High-strength Billet Steel (integral spiral shaft).

Failure Mode

Fatigue cracking from age or minor impact.

Virtually indestructible; tested to 5,000+ cycles.

Motor Specs

Low-torque; prone to burnout.

High-torque custom motor for smooth operation.

Grounding

Externally grounded (Incompatible with metal).

Internally grounded to prevent BCM short circuits.

Cost

$700 - $1,200 (Full assembly).

Under $100 (DIY Gear/Motor Kit).

Critical Technical Note: Why the Motor Matters

You cannot simply install a metal gear onto the factory GM motor. The OEM motor circuit is not designed for a conductive metal gear; attempting to "mix and match" will short out your Body Control Module (BCM). Every GruvenParts kit includes our custom-engineered, internally grounded motor to ensure electrical safety and increased torque.

Choosing Your Repair Path

Path 1: DIY Gear & Motor Kit The most cost-effective choice for those comfortable with a workbench repair.

  • Includes: 1 or 2 Billet Steel Gears and High-Torque Motors.
  • Best For: Owners looking for a permanent fix at the lowest price point.

Expert Installation Tips & FAQ

To ensure a successful repair and protect your vehicle's electronics, please review these critical requirements before beginning your installation:

  • The "No-Mix" Rule (Electrical Safety): Never attempt to install the Billet Steel gear using the original OEM motor. The factory motor is externally grounded; using it with a metal gear will create a short circuit and permanently damage your Body Control Module (BCM). You must use the internally grounded motor provided in our kits.
  • Mirror Type Verification: These parts are specifically engineered for Standard (Non-Tow) Mirrors. If your mirror extends outward for towing, these gears will not fit. Click here for our Towing Mirror Gear Page.
  • 2014+ Pickup Differences: If you own a 2014 or newer Silverado/Sierra, the mirror frame plastics differ from earlier generations. While the internal drive unit is identical, the housing disassembly requires a slightly different approach. Please refer specifically to our 2014-2018 PDF Guide.
  • The "Core" Condition (Option 2): If purchasing the pre-assembled drive unit, your returned "core" must be in rebuildable condition. We can only accept units where the motor or spur gear is the point of failure. If the main plastic housing or frame of your drive unit is physically shattered, it cannot be rebuilt or refunded.
  • Tool Tip: We recommend having a basic set of trim removal tools and a small socket set. Take photos during disassembly to ensure wire routing remains clear for the re-install.

Works as described, follow the DYI instructions

Posted by Unknown on 30th Sep 2017

The mirror assembly is not the most fun to disassemble and reassemble. With all the options on an LTZ Tahoe Couldn't have done it without the clear instructions provided. The Gruven brass gear will last the rest of the vehicles life. a 2009 Tahoe with 39,000 miles. The Plastic gear broke 3 years ago on the passenger side and when the drivers side went I needed to replace both mirrors ) over 600.00 each) What *** thought it would be a good idea to use a plastic gear on something that needs to move when loaded with SNOW or ICE ! -- Response from GruvenParts -- Thanks for the review. I agree, a thin plastic brittle gear has no place in this otherwise very strong assembly. Glad this took care of it for you, please post your experience in the Chevrolet forums as well so others can avoid paying ridiculous $ at the dealership for another mirror assembly that will suffer the same fate in short order.

    Worked Great

Instructions were clear and it took me just over an hour to install it (I purchased the entire motor assembly unit). Motor is faster than factory one, so mirror folds in quicker.

The folding mirror assembly was not the easiest part to instal but with basic mechanical skills and basic tools, I accomplished in a couple of hours.

    Nice replacement, works as advertised

Posted by Unknown on 20th Sep 2017

Thanks Gruven. This replacement part works as advertised. The instructions are well done. I was able to complete without a vice, which was nice b/c I don't have one. I struggled on re-assembly. I think it was due to not following this instruction on page 23 "make sure the spring hat is sitting flat on the black plastic basket as shown in the pic below". I had tested the motor, unmounted, and it turned. Then I put everything together and it didn't work. I had to take everything apart again and double-checked the instruction on page 23. The only other thing I did was turn the Spring Retainer over, as I thought perhaps the spring compression was too tight. I added more lithium grease and put it all back together. Checking at each stage of reassembly that the friction had not built up to prevent the motor from actuating. In the end, it all worked out and the mirror works correctly and seems to be a nice robust -- hopefully long-term -- solution to the problem.

Good Quality Parts - Not Too Difficult to Replace - Cost Effective than Buying a New Mirror Assembly

Posted by M Lee on 16th Sep 2017

My mirror stopped folding due to the broken "plastic" gear with my GM mirror. There was no after market mirrors available that has all the power functions I like; and the GM unit costs more than $500. I decided I will buy this replacement part and try following the instructions and fix it myself. Heres what I have learned from the repairing process. The instructions were very clear and quite easy to follow. I found it easier to remove the entire mirror assembly from my car and took my time to disassemble it. Removing the mirror from the base was a bit challenging and required some elbow grease. For welding the new brass gear to the shaft, I used 24 hr epoxy glue and filled all the voids inside the gear. I allowed it to air dry for 48 hr before putting it back together. I did, however, need to grind off a little bit of the new motor shaft. It is longer than the original one and did not fit tightly with the plastic housing (this was not mentioned in the instructions). I also followed the instruction to grind off the two notches from the bottom metal circular disc. It was overall pretty easy to do with a Dremel tool. The new gear/motor is faster and stronger than the original one. I did notice that the motor is louder than the original one. But that's a non-issue for me. Overall, I am happy with this purchase. I definitely saved a bunch too and am happy to keep my original mirror which I like very much.

    WORKS GREAT

The mirror assembly is not the most fun to disassemble and reassemble. Couldnt have done it without the clear instructions provided. Idiotic design to have a plastic gear installed in the first place. The Gruven brass gear should last the rest of the vehicles life

Excellent product!! Better than original. 2 very difficult parts to the repair process. 1 prying the mirror off its holder and 2 removing the cover off the gear housing. Maybe someone will make some better videos of theses steps. Be patient and take your time.

Works great, just don't be in a hurry

Part arrived within a few days. It's a little hard to disassemble the case that holds the motor. Other than waiting 24 hours for the JB Weld to dry, everything worked great.

    Excellent replacement motor

Posted by Chemical Engineer on 24th Aug 2017

I bought the assembled replacement motor for my 2008 GMC Sierra folding mirror. It was relatively easy to change following Gruven Parts web site detailed instruction sheet. The main reason for my purchase was that the motor replacement can be accomplished from outside the truck. It did not require removal of any interior door panels. The new passenger side mirror now folds faster than old mirror. Highly recommended.
