Description

GM Power Folding Mirror Repair Kit (Billet Steel)

Stop replacing $1,000 mirrors with the same flawed parts. The factory power-folding mirrors on GM trucks and SUVs fail because of a single, inexpensive plastic gear. When that gear cracks, dealers charge upwards of $700–$1,200 for a full mirror assembly that carries the exact same defect.

GruvenParts.com provides a permanent, engineered solution: high-strength Billet Steel gears and high-torque motors designed to outlast the vehicle.

The Engineering Gap: OEM Failure vs. GruvenParts Solution

Feature

OEM Factory Unit / Boost Auto

GruvenParts Billet Solution

Gear Material

Thin, fragile plastic spur gear.

High-strength Billet Steel (integral spiral shaft).

Failure Mode

Fatigue cracking from age or minor impact.

Virtually indestructible; tested to 5,000+ cycles.

Motor Specs

Low-torque; prone to burnout.

High-torque custom motor for smooth operation.

Grounding

Externally grounded (Incompatible with metal).

Internally grounded to prevent BCM short circuits.

Cost

$700 - $1,200 (Full assembly).

Under $100 (DIY Gear/Motor Kit).

Critical Technical Note: Why the Motor Matters

You cannot simply install a metal gear onto the factory GM motor. The OEM motor circuit is not designed for a conductive metal gear; attempting to "mix and match" will short out your Body Control Module (BCM). Every GruvenParts kit includes our custom-engineered, internally grounded motor to ensure electrical safety and increased torque.

Choosing Your Repair Path

Path 1: DIY Gear & Motor Kit The most cost-effective choice for those comfortable with a workbench repair.

  • Includes: 1 or 2 Billet Steel Gears and High-Torque Motors.
  • Best For: Owners looking for a permanent fix at the lowest price point.
  • Compatibility: Fits 2007–Present GM Non-Tow Mirrors (Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Acadia, Traverse, Enclave, Escalade).

Path 2: Pre-Assembled Drive Unit (Core Exchange)

Skip the internal assembly and swap the entire drive unit.

  • Includes: A fully rebuilt motor drive unit with the steel gear and motor already installed and tested.
  • Process: Requires a $30 core deposit. Send us your rebuildable old unit to receive your refund.
  • Note: Due to high demand and core availability, lead times can vary (approx. 4–6 weeks). For the fastest turnaround, you may send your unit in for a same-day rebuild.

Application & Fitment

This kit is designed for Standard (Non-Towing) Power Folding Mirrors on the following 2007–Present models:

  • Chevy: Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Avalanche, Traverse.
  • GMC: Sierra, Yukon, Denali, Acadia.
  • Cadillac/Buick: Escalade, Enclave.

Warranty: This product carries a Limited Lifetime Warranty. If the gear or motor fails under normal operating conditions, we will replace it free of charge—you only pay shipping.

Expert Installation Tips & FAQ

To ensure a successful repair and protect your vehicle's electronics, please review these critical requirements before beginning your installation:

  • The "No-Mix" Rule (Electrical Safety): Never attempt to install the Billet Steel gear using the original OEM motor. The factory motor is externally grounded; using it with a metal gear will create a short circuit and permanently damage your Body Control Module (BCM). You must use the internally grounded motor provided in our kits.
  • Mirror Type Verification: These parts are specifically engineered for Standard (Non-Tow) Mirrors. If your mirror extends outward for towing, these gears will not fit. Click here for our Towing Mirror Gear Page.
  • 2014+ Pickup Differences: If you own a 2014 or newer Silverado/Sierra, the mirror frame plastics differ from earlier generations. While the internal drive unit is identical, the housing disassembly requires a slightly different approach. Please refer specifically to our 2014-2018 PDF Guide.
  • The "Core" Condition (Option 2): If purchasing the pre-assembled drive unit, your returned "core" must be in rebuildable condition. We can only accept units where the motor or spur gear is the point of failure. If the main plastic housing or frame of your drive unit is physically shattered, it cannot be rebuilt or refunded.
  • Tool Tip: We recommend having a basic set of trim removal tools and a small socket set. Take photos during disassembly to ensure wire routing remains clear for the re-install.

    Perfect Replacement

Posted by Justin Wallace on 28th Feb 2018

I've already replaced one folding mirror motor on my 08' Escalade with an OEM part and when the second went out on me I looked into an upgrade. This works perfectly and is faster than the original motor. It's slightly louder than OEM (maybe that's GM's excuse for using such lousy plastic gears). I'll definitely be buying another when my remaining OEM motor goes out.

    Fast, EASY fix!!

Posted by Unknown on 26th Feb 2018

If GM wants $800-$1000 to fix this I will do them all day for $400 ;-) This was one of the easiest jobs I’ve done on a vehicle. If you have any mechanical aptitude at all you can do this. Great detailed instructions, but the pictures could have a bit more definition. I definitely recommend this product.

    Excellent Replacement Motor and gear

Posted by Unknown on 25th Feb 2018

I'm not at all mechanically inclined so bought the fully assembled motor and gear, installation was easy with the step by step guide. The most difficult part was removing and reinstalling the glass. I ended up breaking my glass mirror trying to get it back on. (my own fault). Use caution here. Motor is louder than factory as others noted however also much quicker than my other one (old factory side) that I didn't replace. Very happy with this product and with the high level of customer service! Thank you.

    Worked great!

Thrilled with this fix...it saved me about 800 dollars when the folding mirror on my 08 Buick stopped working. I bought the gear and motor and decided to try and repair it myself. It was actually a fun and satisfying DIY project and everything went perfectly! The instructions made it simple. Mirror seems to fold even faster, too. Thank you for creating this.

    great replacement parts!

Posted by Unknown on 19th Feb 2018

Had a broken plastic gear on 2010 GMC Yukon folding mirror. Bought the motor/gear combo from Gruven. Excellent instructions on step-by-step disassembly of mirror. I would rate this as a slightly more advanced DIY job. (Mainly due to epoxy process to attach new gear on old worm gear shaft, grinding tabs off of the base ring and I did have to grind 1.5mm off of the motor shaft). But- if you are comfortable fixing mechanical issues, this won’t be any problem. Only Troubleshooting I had was the longer shaft on motor - it was hitting plastic housing & not allowing turn. I contacted Gruven and got great customer service. Apparently there can be up to 2mm difference in length on the replacement part vs OEM. Paul walked me through issue & once I shortened the motor shaft - works like a charm! Definitely recommend. -- Response -- Thanks for the fair review. We do now sell the integral main spiral w/brass gear pre-attached, so that will eliminate the epoxy step. Also, we are making new motors with 18.5mm shaft length so this will remedy the slightly long motor shaft as well. Great input, we appreciate all of your comments !! Paul@GruvenParts.com

Great replacement... was a bit more difficult to remove the mirror than I expected.. but other than that it went quite well.. I have never tried removing or replacing any mirrors.. so the instructions were very helpful.. it took approximately 2 hours for me and a friend to complete.. now my 2007 Cadillac Escalade EXT is like new again!!
