Description

GM Power Folding Mirror Repair Kit (Billet Steel)

Stop replacing $1,000 mirrors with the same flawed parts. The factory power-folding mirrors on GM trucks and SUVs fail because of a single, inexpensive plastic gear. When that gear cracks, dealers charge upwards of $700–$1,200 for a full mirror assembly that carries the exact same defect.

GruvenParts.com provides a permanent, engineered solution: high-strength Billet Steel gears and high-torque motors designed to outlast the vehicle.

The Engineering Gap: OEM Failure vs. GruvenParts Solution

Feature

OEM Factory Unit / Boost Auto

GruvenParts Billet Solution

Gear Material

Thin, fragile plastic spur gear.

High-strength Billet Steel (integral spiral shaft).

Failure Mode

Fatigue cracking from age or minor impact.

Virtually indestructible; tested to 5,000+ cycles.

Motor Specs

Low-torque; prone to burnout.

High-torque custom motor for smooth operation.

Grounding

Externally grounded (Incompatible with metal).

Internally grounded to prevent BCM short circuits.

Cost

$700 - $1,200 (Full assembly).

Under $100 (DIY Gear/Motor Kit).

Critical Technical Note: Why the Motor Matters

You cannot simply install a metal gear onto the factory GM motor. The OEM motor circuit is not designed for a conductive metal gear; attempting to "mix and match" will short out your Body Control Module (BCM). Every GruvenParts kit includes our custom-engineered, internally grounded motor to ensure electrical safety and increased torque.

Choosing Your Repair Path

Path 1: DIY Gear & Motor Kit The most cost-effective choice for those comfortable with a workbench repair.

  • Includes: 1 or 2 Billet Steel Gears and High-Torque Motors.
  • Best For: Owners looking for a permanent fix at the lowest price point.
  • Compatibility: Fits 2007–Present GM Non-Tow Mirrors (Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Acadia, Traverse, Enclave, Escalade).

Path 2: Pre-Assembled Drive Unit (Core Exchange)

Skip the internal assembly and swap the entire drive unit.

  • Includes: A fully rebuilt motor drive unit with the steel gear and motor already installed and tested.
  • Process: Requires a $30 core deposit. Send us your rebuildable old unit to receive your refund.
  • Note: Due to high demand and core availability, lead times can vary (approx. 4–6 weeks). For the fastest turnaround, you may send your unit in for a same-day rebuild.

Application & Fitment

This kit is designed for Standard (Non-Towing) Power Folding Mirrors on the following 2007–Present models:

  • Chevy: Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Avalanche, Traverse.
  • GMC: Sierra, Yukon, Denali, Acadia.
  • Cadillac/Buick: Escalade, Enclave.

Warranty: This product carries a Limited Lifetime Warranty. If the gear or motor fails under normal operating conditions, we will replace it free of charge—you only pay shipping.

Expert Installation Tips & FAQ

To ensure a successful repair and protect your vehicle's electronics, please review these critical requirements before beginning your installation:

  • The "No-Mix" Rule (Electrical Safety): Never attempt to install the Billet Steel gear using the original OEM motor. The factory motor is externally grounded; using it with a metal gear will create a short circuit and permanently damage your Body Control Module (BCM). You must use the internally grounded motor provided in our kits.
  • Mirror Type Verification: These parts are specifically engineered for Standard (Non-Tow) Mirrors. If your mirror extends outward for towing, these gears will not fit. Click here for our Towing Mirror Gear Page.
  • 2014+ Pickup Differences: If you own a 2014 or newer Silverado/Sierra, the mirror frame plastics differ from earlier generations. While the internal drive unit is identical, the housing disassembly requires a slightly different approach. Please refer specifically to our 2014-2018 PDF Guide.
  • The "Core" Condition (Option 2): If purchasing the pre-assembled drive unit, your returned "core" must be in rebuildable condition. We can only accept units where the motor or spur gear is the point of failure. If the main plastic housing or frame of your drive unit is physically shattered, it cannot be rebuilt or refunded.
  • Tool Tip: We recommend having a basic set of trim removal tools and a small socket set. Take photos during disassembly to ensure wire routing remains clear for the re-install.

    Motor and Drive Shaft (Pre-cemented)

Posted by LRP on 14th Jun 2018

I got this pre-glued because the repair would be quicker and my wife uses that car every day. Followed the advise online to disassemble. Info from YouTube and the Gurven PDF both help. Removing the glass is nerve wracking. Wedged in two places above mirror to provide constant force down while pushing the tabs from the rear seemed to work. Use some blue tape so it does not drop after popping out. Removing the metal cover over the motor assembly is understated. The 4 places that are machine crimped need to have thin screw drivers driven in to separate the cap from the base. Tapping the cover with 4 screwdrivers wedged while the entire assembly is clamped in the vise seemed to (finally) work for me. When the passenger side fails, as it is sure to with the plastic spur gear in production, I will hit the cap a bit harder. Not much can break inside since the motor gets swapped out. Grinding off the metal tabs with a 1" belt sander and keeping it cool with water was straight forward. Re-assembly required a look at the picture that Gruven provided in the PDF to get the parts "right side up". The fact that they fit only one way is helpful but when you don't have it the "right way" the picture helps get them all the right way up. When pressing the spring together it is good to have the right size of socket. My socket was too big and my full set is with my son so I used a 1" hole saw. Turning the cap 1/6 turn is a bit of trial and error the first time. Release the vice or press slowly and do not point it towards your face when you verify TAB A is between TABS B and B-prime. This was quoted at $750 here in Boulder CO. The disassembly took 2 hours and 1 beer. Re-assembly took about 1.5 hours. The same mirror is used on the Escalade. One YouTube mentioned they were quoted at $1,200. My guess is the spares and repairs for these larger SUVs make more profit for GMC than the original sale. That plastic part should never have been approved for a production unit. The entire design looks like they just learned how to use 3D CAD and did not care about the complexity or repair ability at all. Still, what a hell of a tow vehicle. LRP

    GM Folding Mirror Repair

Posted by Greg Daggett on 11th Jun 2018

The motor and gear replacement went well! Very thankful I ran across your product promoted on YouTube with the instructive video. A new mirror from GM is in excess of $500 and they do not have any repair parts. Thanks again for your great product. Greg Daggett

    Works, works, works...

Posted by Nicholas D Cova on 31st May 2018

It works as advertised. I did one about 6 months ago. It was a little difficult. The other side just went out. And this time it was pretty easy (having done one already). The directions are pretty good, but could always be better (in this case a little more detailed).

    totally worth it

directions were complete and easy to follow. it took less time then i thought, and actually went pretty smoothly. no more fluttering (which was especially bad with my slide-on tow mirror extensions). the mirrors (and tow extensions) whip in and out like a champ now!

    Mirror repair

Good product and the parts fit and operate wonderfully. Watching video's on line helped a lot to understand how to disassemble the unit without breaking a lot of expensive parts. Once you have done one the second time is a piece of cake.

    2007 power folding mirrors

Posted by JHFinch on 13th May 2018

BEAUTIFUL !!! quality parts and simple installation with help from instructions and UTUBE video, took a little extra time disassembling and being careful not to damage or break anything. biggest struggle was getting mirror out, worst part was popping metal cover of gear/motor housing. overall went smooth and the mirror works perfect, even better than original, driver side will be a breeze. THANK YOU so much Gruvenparts for having this fantastic quality product available.

    Fixed my problems

Posted by Jim on 2nd May 2018

I have this psycho robin that will sit on my door and fight himself in my mirrors. Needless to say, his... guano was spread all over the doors, bedsides, windows, etc. I was folding them in by hand, but if it was raining hard, I'd forget and wake up to Crapageddon the next morning. I work 2nd shift, btw, so usually don't get up til around 10am, that crazy bird would've been at it several hours by then. These parts fixed my problem, rain or shine. They were easy to install, took about 2 hours on my '09 Silverado, and work great. They've been used a few weeks now and I'm very happy with 'em, that bird, not so much. He pretty much quit, but will still hop around and look for his reflection from time to time, but the truck isn't covered anymore.
