Description

GM Power Folding Mirror Repair Kit (Billet Steel)

Stop replacing $1,000 mirrors with the same flawed parts. The factory power-folding mirrors on GM trucks and SUVs fail because of a single, inexpensive plastic gear. When that gear cracks, dealers charge upwards of $700–$1,200 for a full mirror assembly that carries the exact same defect.

GruvenParts.com provides a permanent, engineered solution: high-strength Billet Steel gears and high-torque motors designed to outlast the vehicle.

The Engineering Gap: OEM Failure vs. GruvenParts Solution

Feature

OEM Factory Unit / Boost Auto

GruvenParts Billet Solution

Gear Material

Thin, fragile plastic spur gear.

High-strength Billet Steel (integral spiral shaft).

Failure Mode

Fatigue cracking from age or minor impact.

Virtually indestructible; tested to 5,000+ cycles.

Motor Specs

Low-torque; prone to burnout.

High-torque custom motor for smooth operation.

Grounding

Externally grounded (Incompatible with metal).

Internally grounded to prevent BCM short circuits.

Cost

$700 - $1,200 (Full assembly).

Under $100 (DIY Gear/Motor Kit).

Critical Technical Note: Why the Motor Matters

You cannot simply install a metal gear onto the factory GM motor. The OEM motor circuit is not designed for a conductive metal gear; attempting to "mix and match" will short out your Body Control Module (BCM). Every GruvenParts kit includes our custom-engineered, internally grounded motor to ensure electrical safety and increased torque.

Choosing Your Repair Path

Path 1: DIY Gear & Motor Kit The most cost-effective choice for those comfortable with a workbench repair.

  • Includes: 1 or 2 Billet Steel Gears and High-Torque Motors.
  • Best For: Owners looking for a permanent fix at the lowest price point.
  • Compatibility: Fits 2007–Present GM Non-Tow Mirrors (Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Acadia, Traverse, Enclave, Escalade).

Path 2: Pre-Assembled Drive Unit (Core Exchange)

Skip the internal assembly and swap the entire drive unit.

  • Includes: A fully rebuilt motor drive unit with the steel gear and motor already installed and tested.
  • Process: Requires a $30 core deposit. Send us your rebuildable old unit to receive your refund.
  • Note: Due to high demand and core availability, lead times can vary (approx. 4–6 weeks). For the fastest turnaround, you may send your unit in for a same-day rebuild.

Application & Fitment

This kit is designed for Standard (Non-Towing) Power Folding Mirrors on the following 2007–Present models:

  • Chevy: Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Avalanche, Traverse.
  • GMC: Sierra, Yukon, Denali, Acadia.

Expert Installation Tips & FAQ

To ensure a successful repair and protect your vehicle's electronics, please review these critical requirements before beginning your installation:

  • The "No-Mix" Rule (Electrical Safety): Never attempt to install the Billet Steel gear using the original OEM motor. The factory motor is externally grounded; using it with a metal gear will create a short circuit and permanently damage your Body Control Module (BCM). You must use the internally grounded motor provided in our kits.
  • Mirror Type Verification: These parts are specifically engineered for Standard (Non-Tow) Mirrors. If your mirror extends outward for towing, these gears will not fit. Click here for our Towing Mirror Gear Page.
  • 2014+ Pickup Differences: If you own a 2014 or newer Silverado/Sierra, the mirror frame plastics differ from earlier generations. While the internal drive unit is identical, the housing disassembly requires a slightly different approach. Please refer specifically to our 2014-2018 PDF Guide.
  • The "Core" Condition (Option 2): If purchasing the pre-assembled drive unit, your returned "core" must be in rebuildable condition. We can only accept units where the motor or spur gear is the point of failure. If the main plastic housing or frame of your drive unit is physically shattered, it cannot be rebuilt or refunded.
  • Tool Tip: We recommend having a basic set of trim removal tools and a small socket set. Take photos during disassembly to ensure wire routing remains clear for the re-install.

Great Product, better option than buying a new power folding mirror!

Posted by DeWayne C Griffin on 16th Mar 2019

I sides wiped a mailbox, and eventually my passenger mirror stopped folding. I did a lot of research. The dealer wanted $650 for a replacement 2011 Tahoe power folding mirror. I found Gruven, asked a few questions and eventually bought a replacement motor. The process to replace the motor is straight forward, just follow the instructions. My only problem was the heater wires, the contacts were rusted onto the mirror prongs, I had to keep working them with pliers, they finally came off. It definitely moves faster than the original drivers side mirror. I have had no issues after putting everything back together. Awesome product! -- Response from GruvenParts Thanks DeWayne for the review. Regrading those heater wires, I know what you mean. If they are really rusted onto back of mirror, sometimes I clip them and resolder them. We just want to be very careful not to break the tangs off the back of the mirror. Normally and gentle up/down while pulling motion gets them to come off but if rusted solid, I would suggest clipping the wires then just resoldering. It doesnt matter the orientation as its just a DC electric heater in there so it can power in either direction. Paul@GruvenParts.com

    Power mirror motor replacement

Posted by Dwight Allen on 9th Mar 2019

The rebuilt motor was exactly what I needed, works great and with the help of YouTube videos removing and installing was a breeze. The mirror works perfectly. The only reason for the four star rating was the 8 days to receive the motor and I thought a little expensive for a rebuilt.

    Excellent Fix for OEM Junk!

Posted by Tim Carver on 3rd Mar 2019

Great bunch of people to buy from! Install, both sides, hour and a half. Hint: Clamped a 6" C- clamp vertical in vise, used appropriate sockets on top and bottom to compress and hold spring. -- Response -- Thanks Tim. Also, you can use a short length of 1" PVC and body weight to press down on the spring retainer. Wear eye protection, and go ahead and wire tie the spring to the unit incase you slip off. This works well for "field repairs". We use a vice with tooling to compress but a length of PVC also will work fine out in the field to quickly compress and rotate and release the spring retainer. Drivers side mirror wouldn't fold and flopped around on my 2007 gmc yukon. Ordered these fixed the drivers side. It was really easy and instructions were perfect. Did the passenger side also because the drivers side worked so smooth and fast. Excellent product and company. Highly recommend!!

    An absolute fix!

Posted by Mark S. on 27th Feb 2019

Had a learning curve on the first side (make sure the new motor is facing the right way for the electric connection), so I basically did that side twice. It took me about an hour and a half to do the second side. Once done, they work better than new. -- Response-- Thanks Mark. We just revised the DIY article now posted in the product description, hopefully this clears up any confusion. Please let us know if there are any other suggestions to improve the DIY article. Excellent product! Problem solver!

Posted by Unknown on 21st Feb 2019

Both of my power fold mirrors on my 2011 Silverado had broken gears in them. Mirrors floppy and not folding. Ordered these after finding them through a forum. Install is very easy with only a couple basic hand tools. Totally worth it and both of my mirrors work perfectly again.

I glad someone finally makes a replacement gear for Tahoe folding mirror.

Posted by Mike on 20th Feb 2019

I ordered the Gear + Motor for my 2009 Tahoe folding mirror. I installed the parts following the supplied directions and the repair was very easy. Only had difficulty removing the heater wires. Took a lot of pulling and a little WD-40 and they came off. This mirror now works better than new. Only regret was I should have ordered two sets. The other mirror moves slower and doesn't close as far. I know it's not going to last much longer.
