Description

GM Power Folding Mirror Repair Kit (Billet Steel)

Stop replacing $1,000 mirrors with the same flawed parts. The factory power-folding mirrors on GM trucks and SUVs fail because of a single, inexpensive plastic gear. When that gear cracks, dealers charge upwards of $700–$1,200 for a full mirror assembly that carries the exact same defect.

GruvenParts.com provides a permanent, engineered solution: high-strength Billet Steel gears and high-torque motors designed to outlast the vehicle.

The Engineering Gap: OEM Failure vs. GruvenParts Solution

Feature

OEM Factory Unit / Boost Auto

GruvenParts Billet Solution

Gear Material

Thin, fragile plastic spur gear.

High-strength Billet Steel (integral spiral shaft).

Failure Mode

Fatigue cracking from age or minor impact.

Virtually indestructible; tested to 5,000+ cycles.

Motor Specs

Low-torque; prone to burnout.

High-torque custom motor for smooth operation.

Grounding

Externally grounded (Incompatible with metal).

Internally grounded to prevent BCM short circuits.

Cost

$700 - $1,200 (Full assembly).

Under $100 (DIY Gear/Motor Kit).

Critical Technical Note: Why the Motor Matters

You cannot simply install a metal gear onto the factory GM motor. The OEM motor circuit is not designed for a conductive metal gear; attempting to "mix and match" will short out your Body Control Module (BCM). Every GruvenParts kit includes our custom-engineered, internally grounded motor to ensure electrical safety and increased torque.

Expert Installation Tips & FAQ

To ensure a successful repair and protect your vehicle's electronics, please review these critical requirements before beginning your installation:

  • The "No-Mix" Rule (Electrical Safety): Never attempt to install the Billet Steel gear using the original OEM motor. The factory motor is externally grounded; using it with a metal gear will create a short circuit and permanently damage your Body Control Module (BCM). You must use the internally grounded motor provided in our kits.
  • Mirror Type Verification: These parts are specifically engineered for Standard (Non-Tow) Mirrors. If your mirror extends outward for towing, these gears will not fit. Click here for our Towing Mirror Gear Page.
  • 2014+ Pickup Differences: If you own a 2014 or newer Silverado/Sierra, the mirror frame plastics differ from earlier generations. While the internal drive unit is identical, the housing disassembly requires a slightly different approach. Please refer specifically to our 2014-2018 PDF Guide.
  • The "Core" Condition (Option 2): If purchasing the pre-assembled drive unit, your returned "core" must be in rebuildable condition. We can only accept units where the motor or spur gear is the point of failure. If the main plastic housing or frame of your drive unit is physically shattered, it cannot be rebuilt or refunded.
  • Tool Tip: We recommend having a basic set of trim removal tools and a small socket set. Take photos during disassembly to ensure wire routing remains clear for the re-install.

    Perfect!

The $99.99 2 motor 2 spur gear option allowed for a cost effective fix of both folding mirrors on my 2007 Suburban. Parts arrived in a timely fashion and installation via web printable guide was a breeze. I also feel confident that the all brass gears will provide lifetime of durable function.

    Great parts

Excellent parts and cost effective COA for failing manufacturer engineering. Read the DIY, the install is not quick and easy though...it will take some time and effort.

    INCREDIBLE

Works outstanding! Very thankful for someone fixing a total FAIL on GM's part. Thanks for providing an outstanding fix with great instructions. If you don't have patience, I recommend buying the entire unit as it would be MUCH easier. However, it was challenging and fun tearing it all apart.

Works like it is supposed to, just like the first one did.

It is exactly as advertised. Harder to get that mirror apart than to attach it. It is quieter than the first one I bought from Gruven. They are much quicker to move in and out. They even sound sturdier. Ours gets used multiple times daily. Sam

Great product. Did everything as advertised. Would have been even better if there were printed installation instructions with diagrams.Would be great if there were a printed guarantee.

2008 Avalanche LTX folding drivers side mirror fix

Posted by Bruce R on 13th Apr 2019

Called GM Dealer and they stated they only sell new mirrors and will install.....for $930.00. My mirror has a chrome upper shroud. I purchased the entire rebuild from Gruven for about $250.00. Sounded MUCH better than GM! Gruven had instructions at their site and the instructions were spot on. This is not the first time I used Gruven as I have 2 door lock actuators also supplied by them on this vehicle. The newly installed mirror motor appears to be a little quicker in the fold in and fold out position compared to the original passenger mirror. NOT a complaint!!! And to top things off, Gruven puts a lifetime warranty on the unit.

    Performed as advertised

I'm an old guy with severe arthritis and using the info provided on the gruvenparts website I was able to successfully replace the motors and spur gear assemblies (driver & passenger side folding mirrors) in my 2007 Silverado. The instructions were clear and accurate and both mirrors operate like new. I do not have an arbor press but used my drill press and a piece 1" PVC notched to fit the spring retainer tabs and everything worked well. The most difficult part of the entire undertaking was the actual removal of the mirrors. I think I was not being forceful enough out of fear of breaking the mirrors. Glad I decided to go this route. If I can do you can do it!!!

    2008 Chevy Tahoe Fix

Posted by Rod on 8th Apr 2019

Motor and gears work great and much faster than OEM! Bought the pair epoxied -ready to install - replacing only the "failed" driver's side motor and gear. The passenger side will probably "never" fail given I have the second assembly for backup. Of course, if I had not purchased both, the second would have failed for sure next month...... Buy both and be prepared, or change both so you have both mirrors folding at the same speed if it matters...... Great product..

    It's better than new!

Posted by Paul Z on 2nd Apr 2019

Much higher quality than the orignal plastic gears, which cracked and eventually burned up the motor. I bought the pre-attached gear as I didn't have any epoxy and figured $10 more was worth it already being done. A medium difficulty install since I don't have a vice or anything to compress the spring in the motor assembly. I screwed the assembly to a 2x6 board and used the handles of needle nosed pliers to compress the spring and remove the retaining ring. It was tricky but can be done. ***One note that I didn't see in the guide*** The original motor worm gear had a rubber washer on the end of it when I removed it. The one I purchased here had a metal washer on it. Be careful not to lose either when you're taking them out of the package or installing it. I only had one new motor with the washer(I could have easily lost it since it's so small) so I kept the old rubber one for my other new motor that doesn't have one. I bought two for when the other one fails, but might replace it when I get a little time since the new one operates 2x faster(not that it's much of a difference) and heavier duty. It's worth the $100 to do it on your own instead of paying for a new mirror (Aftermarket was close to $200 for me with the turn signal, blind spot, etc for each mirror). If you can't do it, check with your mechanic to see if they'll do it for you if you provide the parts. The install guide on the web site explains everything and makes it much easier to do since I couldn't find any videos that show this. I might make a condensed version of one since it's non-existent, but definitely recommend the install guide! Shipping was very quick! I think I received the parts within 3 days after ordering, but am only 2 states away. Either way, you won't have to wait weeks to get your parts.
