Description

GM Power Folding Mirror Repair Kit (Billet Steel)

Stop replacing $1,000 mirrors with the same flawed parts. The factory power-folding mirrors on GM trucks and SUVs fail because of a single, inexpensive plastic gear. When that gear cracks, dealers charge upwards of $700–$1,200 for a full mirror assembly that carries the exact same defect.

GruvenParts.com provides a permanent, engineered solution: high-strength Billet Steel gears and high-torque motors designed to outlast the vehicle.

The Engineering Gap: OEM Failure vs. GruvenParts Solution

Feature

OEM Factory Unit / Boost Auto

GruvenParts Billet Solution

Gear Material

Thin, fragile plastic spur gear.

High-strength Billet Steel (integral spiral shaft).

Failure Mode

Fatigue cracking from age or minor impact.

Virtually indestructible; tested to 5,000+ cycles.

Motor Specs

Low-torque; prone to burnout.

High-torque custom motor for smooth operation.

Grounding

Externally grounded (Incompatible with metal).

Internally grounded to prevent BCM short circuits.

Cost

$700 - $1,200 (Full assembly).

Under $100 (DIY Gear/Motor Kit).

Critical Technical Note: Why the Motor Matters

You cannot simply install a metal gear onto the factory GM motor. The OEM motor circuit is not designed for a conductive metal gear; attempting to "mix and match" will short out your Body Control Module (BCM). Every GruvenParts kit includes our custom-engineered, internally grounded motor to ensure electrical safety and increased torque.

Choosing Your Repair Path

Path 1: DIY Gear & Motor Kit The most cost-effective choice for those comfortable with a workbench repair.

  • Includes: 1 or 2 Billet Steel Gears and High-Torque Motors.
  • Best For: Owners looking for a permanent fix at the lowest price point.
  • Compatibility: Fits 2007–Present GM Non-Tow Mirrors (Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Acadia, Traverse, Enclave, Escalade).

Path 2: Pre-Assembled Drive Unit (Core Exchange)

Skip the internal assembly and swap the entire drive unit.

  • Includes: A fully rebuilt motor drive unit with the steel gear and motor already installed and tested.
  • Process: Requires a $30 core deposit. Send us your rebuildable old unit to receive your refund.
  • Note: Due to high demand and core availability, lead times can vary (approx. 4–6 weeks). For the fastest turnaround, you may send your unit in for a same-day rebuild.

Application & Fitment

This kit is designed for Standard (Non-Towing) Power Folding Mirrors on the following 2007–Present models:

  • Chevy: Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Avalanche, Traverse.
  • GMC: Sierra, Yukon, Denali, Acadia.

Warranty: This product carries a Limited Lifetime Warranty. If the gear or motor fails under normal operating conditions, we will replace it free of charge—you only pay shipping.

Expert Installation Tips & FAQ

To ensure a successful repair and protect your vehicle's electronics, please review these critical requirements before beginning your installation:

  • The "No-Mix" Rule (Electrical Safety): Never attempt to install the Billet Steel gear using the original OEM motor. The factory motor is externally grounded; using it with a metal gear will create a short circuit and permanently damage your Body Control Module (BCM). You must use the internally grounded motor provided in our kits.
  • Mirror Type Verification: These parts are specifically engineered for Standard (Non-Tow) Mirrors. If your mirror extends outward for towing, these gears will not fit. Click here for our Towing Mirror Gear Page.
  • 2014+ Pickup Differences: If you own a 2014 or newer Silverado/Sierra, the mirror frame plastics differ from earlier generations. While the internal drive unit is identical, the housing disassembly requires a slightly different approach. Please refer specifically to our 2014-2018 PDF Guide.
  • The "Core" Condition (Option 2): If purchasing the pre-assembled drive unit, your returned "core" must be in rebuildable condition. We can only accept units where the motor or spur gear is the point of failure. If the main plastic housing or frame of your drive unit is physically shattered, it cannot be rebuilt or refunded.
  • Tool Tip: We recommend having a basic set of trim removal tools and a small socket set. Take photos during disassembly to ensure wire routing remains clear for the re-install.

    Great Parts and Install Video

Posted by Allan on 29th Mar 2020

Superior parts when compared to the replaced GM OEM parts. Install video is spot on with instruction. Watched the video before ordering the parts and once when the parts arrived. Driver side plastic gear was cracked, so repaired it first. As others have commented the Gruven parts out perform the GM OEM and it is noticeable when you test the repair. My Notes: (1) Used a scrap piece of 1 inch pipe to depress the spring and turn the locking washer with the motor base held in a vice. This method was easier than a socket and vice grips. (2) did not remove tabs as suggested in the install video. Feared misaligning the gears.

Great Parts, well made, great customer service.

Had a bit of trouble with first side, made a call to Gruven on a Friday about 5pm and left a message. They called me back and got me straightened out about 10 minutes later! Second side went much easier. I could have done a 3rd one in about 25 minutes, now that I'm an "expert"

    Excellent product and customer service!

Posted by James Lightsey on 2nd Mar 2020

Glad I found gruvenparts.com after my power folding drivers side mirror stopped working on my 2011 Silverado 2500HD. Ordered two motors and gears since I figured it was just a matter of time before the passenger side mirror would stop working. This was confirmed after disassembly. The passenger side mirror gear was cracked. Ordered new parts on Friday and received them on the following Monday! Quality of the new parts and instructions were excellent. The power folding mirrors worked flawlessly after the new parts were installed. Thanks gruvenparts.com for an excellent product and for offering an alternative to spending hundreds of dollars at the dealership.

    Great fix and documentation

Posted by Unknown on 4th Feb 2020

After the mirror would no longer work (put up with it for a while) I found Gruven Parts and read their docs about how to take apart and install the gear. I ordered the part and got it in 4 days. Following the docs and presto all fixed. I am sure that the other side will fail in time and I will get that one fixed to. I decided not to grind off the tabs on the bottom and see if it makes any difference. So far it still moves faster that the original one. Using a socket and vice the spring can be compressed and then use a large pair of pliers to slowly rotate the keeper ring to match up with the bumps then SLOWLY release the spring to take apart. Place a rag over the entire unit when releasing just in case. Put all new grease in while you have it apart. Nice fix and I am very happy with the results.

    Great replacement parts

Parts are very high quality and fit well. The video of the instructions is detailed and made replacement a breeze. These also operate at least twice as fast as the OEM motors. Great product.

    Works Great!

Posted by George Ilbery on 21st Jan 2020

I installed the kit, 2 gears & 2 motors, the same afternoon I received them. I had watched the installation video before ordering them and double checked a couple of things during the install. They both worked great. The passenger side was broke when we bought our suburban & I didn't normally use them because of that. I accidentally hit the fold button the other day & the drivers mirror broke in a bad angle. Time for repairs. Now I use them regularly due to the size of our vehicle taking up most of the sparing space. Thanks for making a repair available & affordable. Wish I'd done it earlier.

    Great product

Posted by Royston Spencer on 8th Jan 2020

Excellent gear set. Ordered sets for both sides. Did the drivers side as the passenger side still works with the old gears. Followed the instructions on the web site. A little daunting to do but everything came apart the way the instructions said. The mirror now works better than the original passenger side one. I will be changing that one in the spring. I used three or four rubber bands to keep the mirror in place instead of tape and that worked great.
