Description

GM Power Folding Mirror Repair Kit (Billet Steel)

Stop replacing $1,000 mirrors with the same flawed parts. The factory power-folding mirrors on GM trucks and SUVs fail because of a single, inexpensive plastic gear. When that gear cracks, dealers charge upwards of $700–$1,200 for a full mirror assembly that carries the exact same defect.

GruvenParts.com provides a permanent, engineered solution: high-strength Billet Steel gears and high-torque motors designed to outlast the vehicle.

The Engineering Gap: OEM Failure vs. GruvenParts Solution

Feature

OEM Factory Unit / Boost Auto

GruvenParts Billet Solution

Gear Material

Thin, fragile plastic spur gear.

High-strength Billet Steel (integral spiral shaft).

Failure Mode

Fatigue cracking from age or minor impact.

Virtually indestructible; tested to 5,000+ cycles.

Motor Specs

Low-torque; prone to burnout.

High-torque custom motor for smooth operation.

Grounding

Externally grounded (Incompatible with metal).

Internally grounded to prevent BCM short circuits.

Cost

$700 - $1,200 (Full assembly).

Under $100 (DIY Gear/Motor Kit).

Critical Technical Note: Why the Motor Matters

You cannot simply install a metal gear onto the factory GM motor. The OEM motor circuit is not designed for a conductive metal gear; attempting to "mix and match" will short out your Body Control Module (BCM). Every GruvenParts kit includes our custom-engineered, internally grounded motor to ensure electrical safety and increased torque.

Choosing Your Repair Path

Path 1: DIY Gear & Motor Kit The most cost-effective choice for those comfortable with a workbench repair.

  • Includes: 1 or 2 Billet Steel Gears and High-Torque Motors.
  • Best For: Owners looking for a permanent fix at the lowest price point.
  • Compatibility: Fits 2007–Present GM Non-Tow Mirrors (Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Acadia, Traverse, Enclave, Escalade).

Path 2: Pre-Assembled Drive Unit (Core Exchange)

Skip the internal assembly and swap the entire drive unit.

  • Includes: A fully rebuilt motor drive unit with the steel gear and motor already installed and tested.
  • Process: Requires a $30 core deposit. Send us your rebuildable old unit to receive your refund.
  • Note: Due to high demand and core availability, lead times can vary (approx. 4–6 weeks). For the fastest turnaround, you may send your unit in for a same-day rebuild.

Application & Fitment

This kit is designed for Standard (Non-Towing) Power Folding Mirrors on the following 2007–Present models:

  • Chevy: Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Avalanche, Traverse.
  • GMC: Sierra, Yukon, Denali, Acadia.

Warranty: This product carries a Limited Lifetime Warranty. If the gear or motor fails under normal operating conditions, we will replace it free of charge—you only pay shipping.

Expert Installation Tips & FAQ

To ensure a successful repair and protect your vehicle's electronics, please review these critical requirements before beginning your installation:

  • The "No-Mix" Rule (Electrical Safety): Never attempt to install the Billet Steel gear using the original OEM motor. The factory motor is externally grounded; using it with a metal gear will create a short circuit and permanently damage your Body Control Module (BCM). You must use the internally grounded motor provided in our kits.
  • Mirror Type Verification: These parts are specifically engineered for Standard (Non-Tow) Mirrors. If your mirror extends outward for towing, these gears will not fit. Click here for our Towing Mirror Gear Page.
  • 2014+ Pickup Differences: If you own a 2014 or newer Silverado/Sierra, the mirror frame plastics differ from earlier generations. While the internal drive unit is identical, the housing disassembly requires a slightly different approach. Please refer specifically to our 2014-2018 PDF Guide.
  • The "Core" Condition (Option 2): If purchasing the pre-assembled drive unit, your returned "core" must be in rebuildable condition. We can only accept units where the motor or spur gear is the point of failure. If the main plastic housing or frame of your drive unit is physically shattered, it cannot be rebuilt or refunded.
  • Tool Tip: We recommend having a basic set of trim removal tools and a small socket set. Take photos during disassembly to ensure wire routing remains clear for the re-install.

    permanent fix!

Posted by Unknown on 9th Feb 2021

This company is awesome! I tore apart my folding mirror on my 2015 GMC P/U to find out why it wouldn’t fold or unfold consistently. I found the culprit, a plastic drive gear was split. I researched my truck and folding mirror problem and Gruven parts came up. Replaced drive gear with all brass one and a new motor. Works great and I couldn’t be happier. Thanks.

    My Mirror Folds Again

Posted by Ken S on 9th Feb 2021

I had grief with one mirror for about a year when I was surfing on line on YouTube and came across there video, So ordered the part for the one mirror. Changed it and it worked better than the OEM that I had to order the second for the other side. This was the second video I watched and it was much more detailed than the first as what tools were needed and to mark the parts that you are going to reuse on your mirror. Good parts and has been working great ever since, Even up here in The Great White North of Canada. Thanks Again Gruven

    Great product. Works as advertised

Posted by Andrew on 8th Feb 2021

Both mirrors on my 2011 Silverado had stopped folding with the switch. I followed the instructions from the YouTube video. No problem. Mirrors now works like new. I previously had one of the mirrors replaced under extended warranty, however it failed again after about three years. When I disassembled the motor drive unit, the problem was that the OEM nylon gears had cracked on the shaft. Now, I'm confident that the Gruvenparts brass gears will last the life of my vehicle. I saved over $700 by not having to purchase new mirrors with the same problematic nylon gears. THANKS Gruven ! -- response -- Andrew - thanks for the review and this is the exact reason we make these metal gears. The OEM unit is pretty reliable but they put a faulty motor and cheap plastic gear in the unit, which makes people have to spend upwards of $700 on another replacement. No sense. Glad you found us and please check out the other items in the GM trucks section, there is always more coming along these same lines. Paul@GruvenParts.com

update after having the new parts for a couple of years

Posted by steve e on 8th Feb 2021

My mirrors are still working great with no issues on my 2009 Tahoe. Back in mid January I was in an accident and one of the mirrors was slammed into head on by the vehicle that side swiped me. Outside of losing the mirror cap the mirror still works like nothing happened. If this would been the old plastic part the mirror would of been useless. Thx again Gruven!!

    ‘09 Chevy Suburban 2500 4x4: Saved me $1200-$1300

Posted by Scott on 1st Feb 2021

Driver side mirror stopped folding in and out and became loose (would move back on acceleration and forward on breaking). Motor would spin, but no movement of the mirror. All other functions of the mirror (turn signal, defroster, adjustment) still worked. Asked the service advisor at the Chevy dealership if they sold parts to rebuild and he said no. Only the whole mirror assembly and quoted me $1200-$1300. Told him to go pound sand. Saw a video from Gruvenparts on how to fix the mirror on YouTube, and immediately ordered the parts. Very easy to install with the help of the video. Very well built parts and fit just like OEM. would highly recommend to anyone with the same problem. - Response from GruvenParts - "Asked the service advisor at the Chevy dealership if they sold parts to rebuild and he said no. Only the whole mirror assembly and quoted me $1200-$1300. Told him to go pound sand. Saw a video from Gruvenparts " Nice Work ! These guys have to know its not acceptable to build a cheap, failure prone part, then expect us to come back and keep buying it over and over. You repaired and vastly improved what you had for much less $. DIY // UPGRADE // SAVE

Saved Time with ordering motor and gears.

Posted by Noel on 1st Feb 2021

I ordered two compete motors with pre attached gears for my 2008 Suburban. My passengers side mirrors plastic gear was cracked causing it's ability to function. My only problem was broken wires which have nothing to do with the Gruvenparts I received. When I started to disassemble the drivers side I found out the mirror assembly was a unknown brand of after market item. I will replace the motor and gear set up in the future when I source a factory replacement mirror. Thanks

    Exceeded My Expectations

Posted by Greg M. on 29th Jan 2021

My power mirror had failed (plastic gear disintegrated!) I decided to replace only the gear portion from another vendor, but the original motor was simply too weak to work properly. So, as advertised by Gruven Parts, I decided to replace both the motor and the gear. The result was outstanding. The mirror now opens and closes with authority. In fact, my other mirror is on it's last leg and I plan on making the same repair there, using Gruven Parts. I highly recommend this product. (NOTE: The repair video on their site guides you through the whole process. Well done and no surprises@)
