Description

GM Power Folding Mirror Repair Kit (Billet Steel)

Stop replacing $1,000 mirrors with the same flawed parts. The factory power-folding mirrors on GM trucks and SUVs fail because of a single, inexpensive plastic gear. When that gear cracks, dealers charge upwards of $700–$1,200 for a full mirror assembly that carries the exact same defect.

GruvenParts.com provides a permanent, engineered solution: high-strength Billet Steel gears and high-torque motors designed to outlast the vehicle.

The Engineering Gap: OEM Failure vs. GruvenParts Solution

Feature

OEM Factory Unit / Boost Auto

GruvenParts Billet Solution

Gear Material

Thin, fragile plastic spur gear.

High-strength Billet Steel (integral spiral shaft).

Failure Mode

Fatigue cracking from age or minor impact.

Virtually indestructible; tested to 5,000+ cycles.

Motor Specs

Low-torque; prone to burnout.

High-torque custom motor for smooth operation.

Grounding

Externally grounded (Incompatible with metal).

Internally grounded to prevent BCM short circuits.

Cost

$700 - $1,200 (Full assembly).

Under $100 (DIY Gear/Motor Kit).

Critical Technical Note: Why the Motor Matters

You cannot simply install a metal gear onto the factory GM motor. The OEM motor circuit is not designed for a conductive metal gear; attempting to "mix and match" will short out your Body Control Module (BCM). Every GruvenParts kit includes our custom-engineered, internally grounded motor to ensure electrical safety and increased torque.

Choosing Your Repair Path

Path 1: DIY Gear & Motor Kit The most cost-effective choice for those comfortable with a workbench repair.

  • Includes: 1 or 2 Billet Steel Gears and High-Torque Motors.
  • Best For: Owners looking for a permanent fix at the lowest price point.
  • Compatibility: Fits 2007–Present GM Non-Tow Mirrors (Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Acadia, Traverse, Enclave, Escalade).

Path 2: Pre-Assembled Drive Unit (Core Exchange)

Skip the internal assembly and swap the entire drive unit.

  • Includes: A fully rebuilt motor drive unit with the steel gear and motor already installed and tested.
  • Process: Requires a $30 core deposit. Send us your rebuildable old unit to receive your refund.
  • Note: Due to high demand and core availability, lead times can vary (approx. 4–6 weeks). For the fastest turnaround, you may send your unit in for a same-day rebuild.

Application & Fitment

This kit is designed for Standard (Non-Towing) Power Folding Mirrors on the following 2007–Present models:

  • Chevy: Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Avalanche, Traverse.
  • GMC: Sierra, Yukon, Denali, Acadia.

Expert Installation Tips & FAQ

To ensure a successful repair and protect your vehicle's electronics, please review these critical requirements before beginning your installation:

  • The "No-Mix" Rule (Electrical Safety): Never attempt to install the Billet Steel gear using the original OEM motor. The factory motor is externally grounded; using it with a metal gear will create a short circuit and permanently damage your Body Control Module (BCM). You must use the internally grounded motor provided in our kits.
  • Mirror Type Verification: These parts are specifically engineered for Standard (Non-Tow) Mirrors. If your mirror extends outward for towing, these gears will not fit. Click here for our Towing Mirror Gear Page.
  • 2014+ Pickup Differences: If you own a 2014 or newer Silverado/Sierra, the mirror frame plastics differ from earlier generations. While the internal drive unit is identical, the housing disassembly requires a slightly different approach. Please refer specifically to our 2014-2018 PDF Guide.
  • The "Core" Condition (Option 2): If purchasing the pre-assembled drive unit, your returned "core" must be in rebuildable condition. We can only accept units where the motor or spur gear is the point of failure. If the main plastic housing or frame of your drive unit is physically shattered, it cannot be rebuilt or refunded.
  • Tool Tip: We recommend having a basic set of trim removal tools and a small socket set. Take photos during disassembly to ensure wire routing remains clear for the re-install.

    Outstanding product

Posted by Unknown on 25th Jun 2021

This is an outstanding product. I would recommend it to anyone. I just bought the gears and motors and spent the $10 so they came already to go. Don’t let let steps fool you, it’s not that hard and even my wife joined in. Most important thing is before you take the motor off the truck, mark the base in reference to the window. That way as you disassemble and reassemble you can constantly check the function. Awesome product. Wife’s very happy now!!

    Very easy repair

Posted by Bruce Bates on 18th Jun 2021

I bought two of the rebuilt folding mirror motor assemblies and was easily able to replace in my 2013 Avalanche using the provided instructions and you tube DIY videos available. Parts were exact fit and work like a charm. Very satisfied.

    GMC truck folding mirror gear

Posted by Craig Goodhart on 7th Jun 2021

The gears are of high quality and much more stout than the nylon originals that broke. My only concern that one side of gear shaft was too large for brass fitting which was part of old gear. Tried to enlarge fitting and split. Using Drexel ground down to appropriate size and worked with no problem. Relatively easy fix and saved a lot of money. Gear is nosier as expected. Video was easy to understand.

Excellent quality and great repair documentation!!!

Posted by Dave Weaver on 21st May 2021

Had to repair the broken plastic gear in my wife's 2012 - Traverse passenger side folding mirror. The documentation and video on how to repair the motor was excellent and I found the details on removing the Traverse/Acadia mirror elsewhere as it's a little different from the Suburban and Trucks. The repair went smooth and was able to easily pull the motor from the housing still attached to the vehicle. Everything went good and it works perfectly now. My only complaints are the mirror is much faster now than the OEM geared one - LOL and also it's quite a bit nosier. I'd assume the noise is due to the brass/metal gears vs. the stock plastic gears, but not that big of a deal.

    Quality gear and motor

Posted by Matt on 17th May 2021

I chose to buy the gear and go torque motor. Received the parts today and immediately went to work. The process on my 2014 GMC Sierra was similar, BUT not the same. The sequence of tearing down my mirrors was different, as well as my gear box. My gear box was a three piece unit, with the top and bottom being plastic! I was able to make the new gears work, but not with a lot of cyphering. If you are not fairly mechanically inclined, I suggest you buy the entire rebuilt gear box. Gruvenparts, are you aware that there are plastic gear boxes out there? You may want to address that in case you get one returned as a core. All in all, great product. -- response -- Thanks Matt. The only real difference in the drive unit is the 2014+ pick up trucks got a plastic top cap and use a circuit board. The bottom of the unit including ALL gears and motor is same as previous gen. Glad you got it all working and let us know if you need more. Paul@GruvenParts.com

works great, communication and shipping could be better

Posted by Unknown on 12th May 2021

The photos and step by step instructions and the parts are great....but...communication lacks. Ordered on 4-15-21 opted for UPS shipping, on 4-19 I received message it had shipped, short time later another message that it was scheduled for shipment. No movement on tracking number for 2 days so I messaged paul@Gruven.parts on 4-21 about status, received this message "Im sorry for delay on this. We are currently machining more of the integral gears and should be done Friday or Saturday and will ship as soon as finished" this would be April 23 or 24. If it shipped the next business day would be the Monday 26th destination is about 8 hours from Atlanta would not take UPS till Friday 30th to deliver. Received the request to review on 4-26 received the parts on 4-30. Seems like there would be a few on hand to ship when requested, I had the mirror off trouble shooting and had to put it back on and take it back off because it took so long for the parts to arrive. -- response -- Sorry for this. We typically dont run out of integral gears but these are anything but typical times. The material shortages are hitting everyone and the mill just would not deliver the steel for us to cut the spirals. Very frustrating as we had people sitting around with nothing to do since no material could be had. Hopefully this administration gets this under control, we better start getting truck drivers again. We're fully in stock now but that was an unfortunate pain caused by the current supply chain dilemma across the board on just about anything you buy right now ... however our communication should NEVER be an issue, please let me know and I will do my best. In this case we were just being told multiple stories from the mill so I relayed lots of info that was constantly changing. Paul@GruvenParts.com

You don't need to buy a new mirror. These parts are the fix/upgrade you need.
