Description

GM Power Folding Mirror Repair Kit (Billet Steel)

Stop replacing $1,000 mirrors with the same flawed parts. The factory power-folding mirrors on GM trucks and SUVs fail because of a single, inexpensive plastic gear. When that gear cracks, dealers charge upwards of $700–$1,200 for a full mirror assembly that carries the exact same defect.

GruvenParts.com provides a permanent, engineered solution: high-strength Billet Steel gears and high-torque motors designed to outlast the vehicle.

The Engineering Gap: OEM Failure vs. GruvenParts Solution

Feature

OEM Factory Unit / Boost Auto

GruvenParts Billet Solution

Gear Material

Thin, fragile plastic spur gear.

High-strength Billet Steel (integral spiral shaft).

Failure Mode

Fatigue cracking from age or minor impact.

Virtually indestructible; tested to 5,000+ cycles.

Motor Specs

Low-torque; prone to burnout.

High-torque custom motor for smooth operation.

Grounding

Externally grounded (Incompatible with metal).

Internally grounded to prevent BCM short circuits.

Cost

$700 - $1,200 (Full assembly).

Under $100 (DIY Gear/Motor Kit).

Critical Technical Note: Why the Motor Matters

You cannot simply install a metal gear onto the factory GM motor. The OEM motor circuit is not designed for a conductive metal gear; attempting to "mix and match" will short out your Body Control Module (BCM). Every GruvenParts kit includes our custom-engineered, internally grounded motor to ensure electrical safety and increased torque.

Choosing Your Repair Path

Path 1: DIY Gear & Motor Kit The most cost-effective choice for those comfortable with a workbench repair.

  • Includes: 1 or 2 Billet Steel Gears and High-Torque Motors.
  • Best For: Owners looking for a permanent fix at the lowest price point.
  • Compatibility: Fits 2007–Present GM Non-Tow Mirrors (Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Acadia, Traverse, Enclave, Escalade).

Path 2: Pre-Assembled Drive Unit (Core Exchange)

Skip the internal assembly and swap the entire drive unit.

  • Includes: A fully rebuilt motor drive unit with the steel gear and motor already installed and tested.
  • Process: Requires a $30 core deposit. Send us your rebuildable old unit to receive your refund.
  • Note: Due to high demand and core availability, lead times can vary (approx. 4–6 weeks). For the fastest turnaround, you may send your unit in for a same-day rebuild.

Application & Fitment

This kit is designed for Standard (Non-Towing) Power Folding Mirrors on the following 2007–Present models:

  • Chevy: Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Avalanche, Traverse.
  • GMC: Sierra, Yukon, Denali, Acadia.

Expert Installation Tips & FAQ

To ensure a successful repair and protect your vehicle's electronics, please review these critical requirements before beginning your installation:

  • The "No-Mix" Rule (Electrical Safety): Never attempt to install the Billet Steel gear using the original OEM motor. The factory motor is externally grounded; using it with a metal gear will create a short circuit and permanently damage your Body Control Module (BCM). You must use the internally grounded motor provided in our kits.
  • Mirror Type Verification: These parts are specifically engineered for Standard (Non-Tow) Mirrors. If your mirror extends outward for towing, these gears will not fit. Click here for our Towing Mirror Gear Page.
  • 2014+ Pickup Differences: If you own a 2014 or newer Silverado/Sierra, the mirror frame plastics differ from earlier generations. While the internal drive unit is identical, the housing disassembly requires a slightly different approach. Please refer specifically to our 2014-2018 PDF Guide.
  • The "Core" Condition (Option 2): If purchasing the pre-assembled drive unit, your returned "core" must be in rebuildable condition. We can only accept units where the motor or spur gear is the point of failure. If the main plastic housing or frame of your drive unit is physically shattered, it cannot be rebuilt or refunded.
  • Tool Tip: We recommend having a basic set of trim removal tools and a small socket set. Take photos during disassembly to ensure wire routing remains clear for the re-install.

    2012 GMC Folding Mirror

Posted by William Wilkes on 20th Jul 2022

The parts that Gruven have designed are better than OEM by far. The video for the installation was top notch, it made the process easy. I know that it is just a matter of time before I once again call on Gruven as I fold and unfold my mirrors every time I leave and reenter the garage.

    Worked Out Great!!

Posted by Raul Ezquivel on 17th Jul 2022

I completed installing the spur gear replacement kit for my 2007 Silverado LTZ power mirrors. EVERYTHING WORKED TO THE "T". I simply followed the video instructions. They worked great and with a little time I saved money and upgraded to a more durable and reliable power fold mirror. I do have a suggestion. Would like to see a more prompt response for questions or a phone call if really needed. I will be ordering other gear replacement parts for my trucks. Thank you

Great fix for an 09 Silverado

Posted by Logan on 17th Jul 2022

I purchased 2 of these motor and spur gear sets to replace the broken spur gears in my factory folding mirrors on my 09 Silverado. My factory folding mirrors had broken within a month after purchasing the truck used in 2018. Installation took 3-4 hours between the 2 mirrors, and was fairly straight forward, although I would highly recommend watching their installation video and referencing their PDF instructions that are available on their website . After finishing assembly I was extremely pleased with the performance, the mirrors fold in and out very quickly, much quicker than they did when I first purchased the truck and still had working mirrors. The only complaint I have is that I did not receive a Brass spur gear as advertised, but instead received a solid stainless steel gear. I did not see this advertised anywhere on the listing before ordering this kit. Being stainless steel it should last longer than the advertised brass spur gear and will likely not cause any problems, although I do worry about the tiny brass worm gear on the motor being worn out quicker than it would if both gears were made of brass, but at least the motors and gears have a lifetime warranty if I ever need it. Overall I am very pleased with this kit and how well it has functioned so far. I would definitely recommend these to a friend if they were looking to fix their broken power folding mirrors -- response from GruvenParts -- Thanks for the review. We cannot make both gears from the same material so this design actually works out better with 1 being harder than the other so they wont gall. The brass motor gears is still very strong, you would never wear it out in 1,000 years. Paul

    Direct replacement

Posted by Brandyn on 30th Jun 2022

These are a great fix for GM full size truck mirrors once they get tired and stop obeying the fold button :) . I used these for both mirrors on my 09 Suburban and they are a direct OEM fit yet higher quality. As a former GM technician, I can say the pdf instructions and video tutorials are spot on if you need them for reference. They took me about an hour per side to swap out, so they are easy enough to knock out over the weekend if you take your time. Much less expensive than unnecessarily replacing both mirror housings.

    Better than the original

Posted by Mike on 19th Jun 2022

Had to replace both folding mirror motors in my 2007 GMC Yukon, as both originals had broken gears in them. Gruven was quick, kept in touch via email, and got my motors back to me working better than before (my mirrors move so smoothly, and fold in faster than ever!) They even got me my core refund back before my motors had arrived. Worth every penny!

    Satisfied 2007 Cadillac EXT.

Posted by gary on 7th Jun 2022

I finished my exterior folding mirror today. Took maybe 4 hours for me. i ordered the motor and gear from Gruven. It arrived a day ahead of its estimated time of arrival. All looked very good. I watched the video instruction on Youtube. Which helped me tremendously. I would say the hardest part of this job was getting the gears in the correct position and of course getting the mirror loose on disassemble. All in all, I am very satisfied with Gruven. Thank you

Good product , well made , good install video , works faster and quieter than stock . Just ordered another gear and motor for the other mirror , its growling in pain and about to give up the ghost . fairly easy swap - out , took about two and a half beers I mean hours and that was relaxing in the man-cave .
